Supports rapid translation of innovative laboratory findings into therapeutics for visual system diseases. The program funds milestone-driven research in two phases: R61 for early translational work up to 2 years, and R33 for late preclinical development and IND/IDE enabling studies up to 4 years. Total duration cannot exceed 5 years. Clinical trials are not allowed. Applicants must propose SMART milestones and contingency plans.
Eligible applicants include U.S. state, county, city, and tribal governments, public and private higher education institutions, nonprofits, and for-profit organizations excluding foreign entities. Foreign subawards/subcontracts are not allowed.
