This funding opportunity supports research to refine and map the innervation of joint tissues by sensory neurons mediating pain. It encourages enhanced clinical pain phenotyping across lifespan and diseases, expansion to new preclinical and NAM models, preclinical testing of novel joint-targeted candidates, and development of joint atlases integrating imaging and molecular datasets. Multidisciplinary collaborations in neurobiology, pain science, data science, orthopedics, and rheumatic disease are encouraged.
Eligible applicants include state, county, city, and tribal governments; public and private higher education institutions; nonprofits; for-profit organizations including small businesses; federal agencies; U.S. territories; faith-based and community organizations; and foreign institutions.
