This program funds research teams to create, expand, and secure open-source ecosystems that address critical national and societal challenges. It supports managing organizations, governance, distributed development, and broad user communities across academia, industry, and government. Funded activities include scoping new ecosystems, establishing sustainable ecosystems based on promising open-source products, and improving safety, security, and privacy of existing ecosystems in fields like AI, cloud computing, healthcare, and national security.
Eligible applicants include U.S.-based for-profit organizations, non-profit non-academic organizations, federal agencies, state and local governments, accredited U.S. institutions of higher education, and federally recognized Tribal Nations.
