The ALERT grant funds competitive awards to non-profit organizations delivering established hazmat response training curricula for volunteer or remote emergency responders. Training covers transportation of crude oil, ethanol, and other flammable liquids by rail, consistent with NFPA standards, enhancing local emergency response capabilities.
Eligible applicants include private and public institutions of higher education and nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status, excluding institutions of higher education for the latter.
