The Forest Legacy Program funds State Lead Agencies to protect environmentally important privately owned forest lands threatened by conversion to non-forest uses. Eligible activities include conservation easements and land purchases that support state priorities and maintain public benefits such as wildlife habitat, clean water, and traditional forest uses. The program encourages partnerships with tribal, local, and federal entities and voluntary landowner participation.
Only State Lead Agencies designated by Governors are eligible to apply. These agencies oversee Forest Legacy Program administration and may hold land or interests acquired through the program.
