The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship provides up to 10 million euros over seven years to enable world-leading researchers abroad to conduct forward-thinking, long-term research at German universities and research institutions. Nominations are made by German institutions and involve peer review. The program aims to attract top international scholars eligible for German professorships, with increased funding and extended sponsorship periods from 2026.
German universities and non-university research institutions (in collaboration with a university) can nominate exceptionally qualified world-leading researchers currently based abroad who are eligible for professorships in Germany. Close relations to nominators are ineligible.
