This funding opportunity supports speculative and high-risk research projects that aim to deliver a step change in the sustainability of future AI systems. Projects should develop novel AI technologies, computational methods, and tools that improve efficiency, robustness, and reduce environmental impacts. The program encourages ambitious, interdisciplinary teams and supports projects lasting up to 24 months with a fixed start date. It excludes majority non-technical research and incremental advances.
Applicants must be based at UK research organisations eligible for UKRI funding. The opportunity is open to research groups and individuals, including research technical professionals. International researchers may participate only as co-leads under specific agreements.
